Purpose Statement
The job of Lifeguard was established for the purpose of supervising the pool area by providing swimming instruction; ensuring safety, regulations and the enjoyment of pool participants; while serving as an ambassador for the Aquatic Center.
This position reports to Aquatic Center Director.
Essential Functions
- Assists in the cleaning of the Aquatic Center facility (e.g. swimming pool, pool deck, locker rooms, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe, clean, sanitary condition.
- Evaluates situations involving swimmers (e.g. improper activities/hazards, persons in distress or in danger of drowning, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or reporting incidents, written or verbally to appropriate personnel for resolutions.
- Maintains records (e.g. attendance sheets, activity records, pool water chemistry, etc.) for the purpose of providing written reference, conveying information and/or meeting mandated requirements.
- Monitors all swimming pool activities (e.g. inappropriate activities, persons in distress, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of participants and enforcing established policies and rules.
- Performs simple water quality tests for the purpose of maintaining State and National pool water chemistry requirements along with a sanitary and hazard free pool.
- Processes various documents for the purpose of complying with district policies and procedures.
- Responds to inquiries for the purpose of conveying information regarding swimming pool operations.
- Supervises the activities of swimmers for the purpose of enforcing safety, rules and regulations.
- Attends scheduled in-service training for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform work functions and remaining knowledgeable with new program guidelines.

- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ability to swim, tread water, etc.; administer first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR; monitoring activities; managing staff/performance; effective listening; and guiding others.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: first aid and CPR; rescue procedures; and safety practices.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: physical stamina; working flexible hours; teamwork; and communication with persons of diverse backgrounds/knowledge/skills.

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in a generally hazard free environment.
