Purpose Statement
The job of Principal - Miller Park was established for the purpose/s of providing direction to staff and therapeutic support for eligible students; facilitating administrative processes; ensuring operation in compliance with county, state and/or federal requirements; providing information on services available to eligible students and families and conveying information regarding school and/or district activities, procedures and referring families to other agencies.
This job reporst to Executive Director of Special Services.
Essential Functions
- Communicates with parents of students in caseload (e.g. telephone calls, email, home visits, etc.) for the purpose of keeping parents informed of student progress and addressing issues of concern.
- Coordinates activities with a variety of outside services agencies, school sites, etc. (e.g. mental health, probation, medical, etc.) for the purpose of providing referrals for families and/or students.
- Coordinates all individual therapy groups, assigning students to individual and group therapies for the purpose of ensuring that student’s therapeutic needs are met.
- Coordinates services with outside agencies for the purpose of ensuring comprehensive programming for students.
- Coordinates training for certified and classified staff for the purpose of ensuring that information and certification requirements are met, and staff is well-prepared to comply with job functions.
- Coordinates transition of students entering and exiting the program for the purpose of maximizing students educational opportunities.
- Develops plans (e.g. Individual Student Success Plan, Behavioral Intervention Plan, etc.) for the purpose of providing interventions and/or delivering services in compliance with established guidelines.
- Develops schedules of all staff assigned to Miller Park for the purpose of ensuring that students and families needs are appropriately met.
- Implements behavioral and student success plans in the classroom for the purpose of supporting the classroom team and/or providing therapeutic interventions as needed.
- Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g. daily case notes, annual reports, classroom observations, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring documentation for future reference in accordance with administrative and legal requirements.
- Makes home visits for the purpose of assessing student needs and/or consulting with parents on student’s progress at school.
- Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Performs casework services with individual students for the purpose of implementing individualized plans of services to support educational objectives.
- Prepares students for transition to next level of education, services or programs for the purpose of assisting in smooth psychological, social and physical adjustment of the required changes.
- Responds student behavioral crises within the school environment for the purpose of providing appropriate interventions outlined in the student’s IEP.
- Responds to all inquiries for the purpose of providing information on district support services and/or educational programs.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: effective listening skills; counseling techniques; behavior management techniques; anger control; self-esteem enhancement techniques; facilitating meetings; and interpersonal aptitude.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities/behaviors; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; community resources; DSM-IV diagnoses and psychiatric disorders; crisis intervention techniques; and treatment modalities and assessment.
ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
Experience Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
